Karen Blixen Coffee Garden and Cottages is a luxury boutique hotel, situated on a historic site in the leafy suburb of Karen, Nairobi. It is the perfect venue to start or finish your African Safari.
The reception at the Karen Blixen Coffee Garden and Cottages, Ltd. is the Historic Swedo House which was the original hunting lodge/farm house, built between 1906 and 1908. It is located approximately half a mile from the Karen Blixen Museum (Bogani House from the film “Out of Africa”).
Location
The Coffee Garden sits on 5 acres of land with large hundred-year-old trees, beautiful gardens and pool, and hundreds of different varieties of blooming flowers and a large population of birds. The historic Grogan/MacMillan Manor House is an additional historic feature which was moved brick by brick from downtown Nairobi to the Karen Blixen Coffee Garden in 2008 to save it from demolition. It is now used for special occasions and dining.
The luxury hotel cottages were built in 2001, and are adjacent to the Karen Golf and Country Club where guests can enjoy a host of leisure activities, including golf, tennis, and squash. A host of other amenities such as shops, restaurants, and financial services can all be found nearby, within the Karen suburb.
Karen Blixen Coffee Garden & Cottages consists of 13 luxurious cottages, each equipped with a large fireplace, spacious private bathroom, wireless internet access, minibar, veranda and satellite TV.
There are a total of 12 individual units including 3 Classic Rooms with luxurious king-size beds, 6 Junior Suites with a cosy seating area around the fireplace and 3 Deluxe Suites with a living room with an open fireplace. There is also a Honeymoon Suite with two fireplaces in the bedroom and a separate seating area.
The cottages are set in gardens surrounded by lush trees with a koi pond adjacent to an inviting Mazeras stone pool, pool bar and restaurant, spa and gym.
Karen Blixen Coffee Garden & Cottages has a small, exclusive poolside restaurant with outdoor and indoor seating surrounded by trees and lush gardens to enhance your “Out of Africa” experience. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served here. This is the perfect place to enjoy our famous Kenyan “Sundowners” with friends. Upon request, guests can have breakfast, take-out meals, or check-in late and have dinner. Room service is also available. The Bedouin style tented restaurant is the perfect place for quiet dinners and safari meetings.
In the bar there is also a TV for broadcasting special sports events. The fitness room and spa are located next to the pool. Massages, manicures, pedicures and facials are especially popular. For more off-site activities, we are close to Karen Golf and Country Club and Race Course Golf Club, which can be booked by reservation.
Horseback riding can be arranged, and a horse race at Ngong Racecourse on (most) Sundays is always an exciting way to end the weekend. Sightseeing tours of Karen and Nairobi can be arranged, including trips to the nearby Karen Blixen Museum, Giraffe Center, Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, Matt Bronze Studios, and Kuzuri Beads. There are also numerous stores, restaurants and recreational activities all within a short drive from the property.
